Do We Really Need Every 3D Model to Be Perfect?

A few thoughts after working with 3D assets on personal projects. I've started wondering whether creating the perfect model from the beginning is always necessary, or if rough ideas are actually a better way to explore and iterate.

I spent some time this week looking through different 3D resources while working on a small personal project. Something I noticed is that I don’t actually need perfect models for most early ideas.

When I’m trying different layouts or testing concepts, a “good enough” model is usually enough to see whether something works. I used to spend too much time polishing details before I even knew if the overall idea made sense.

That made me think about how creative workflows have changed over the past few years. There are now so many ways to sketch ideas quickly, whether it’s drawing, AI-generated references, or simple 3D assets. The first version doesn’t have to be final anymore.

Of course, if you’re building a commercial game or product, quality still matters. But for brainstorming, learning, or prototyping, speed often matters more than perfection.

I’m curious how other people work.

Do you start with rough placeholders and improve them later, or do you prefer building everything carefully from the beginning?
