Checking redirect chains after a site move

After a recent site move, a few pages loaded strangely, and a couple of old links took longer than usual. Everything looked fine in the browser, so it wasn’t obvious what was wrong.

I ran some URLs through a redirect checker and found one page bouncing through three hops before landing at the final URL. I cleaned it up to a single 301. It’s easy to overlook chains when everything seems to work.

How often do you audit redirects? I’m planning to check key pages quarterly, but I’m wondering whether that’s enough. Has anyone dealt with old redirect rules piling up over several redesigns?
