What should I check when transferring my family tree to another computer?
Transferring a family tree to another computer requires more preparation than simply moving one database file. Before starting, create a current backup and identify photographs, documents, media folders, and other files associated with the project. Family Tree Maker Support information can be useful when users need practical guidance for preparing and checking a transfer.
If you use Family Tree Maker 2024, review your project carefully after opening it on the new computer. Check different branches, family relationships, source citations, notes, photographs, and documents. Users working with Family Tree Maker 2019 should follow the same careful approach, particularly when an older project contains many years of research.
Keep the original computer or original project available until everything has been verified. If media is missing, compare the transferred project with the original files. This method can help identify incomplete transfers without risking the original genealogy research.
